Account and Security
Your RetireRange account holds a login and a password — nothing financial. This page covers the login side; for billing, your trial, and cancellation, see Managing your subscription.
Password requirements
Your password needs at least 9 characters and must include a lowercase letter, an uppercase letter, a number, and one symbol from !@#$%^&*()_+,.<>?:;"'{}[]\|=- (tilde, slash, backtick, and spaces don’t count as symbols, so a long passphrase without the rest is still rejected).
A password missing a required character class is refused, with a message naming exactly what’s missing — for example, "Your password still needs an uppercase letter, a symbol such as ! @ # or $." — or, if it has a symbol that isn’t on the accepted list, "Your password still needs a symbol from this list: !@#$%^&*()_+,.<>?:;"'{}[]\|=- (~ / ` and spaces don’t count)." Meeting overall "strength" isn’t enough on its own — a long password missing a whole character class is rejected.
The strength meter under the field tells you what’s missing — for example, "Very Weak — add an uppercase letter." Once every rule is met, it reads:
- Weak up to 10 characters
- Medium at 11–14 characters
- Strong at 15 or more characters
The Strong label is currently hard to read against the page background — a known styling issue, not a sign anything is wrong with your password.
Feedback as you type
The sign-up, Edit profile and password-reset forms check your password while you type, not just when you submit:
- The confirm field tells you whether the two match. A note beside it reads "Passwords match." or "Passwords do not match." It stays quiet while you’re still partway through typing a matching password, so it won’t flag you mid-word.
- Password error messages clear as soon as you start fixing them. Once you type in a password field, a password error from your last attempt goes away. Other errors — an email address already in use, for example — stay until you resubmit.
Signing up
Creating an account takes an email address and a password. If a friend gave you a referral code, there’s an optional Referral code box: it’s pre-filled if you arrived through their link, or you can type or paste the code yourself (case, spaces, and dashes don’t matter). If the code isn’t recognized you’ll see a note, but you can still continue.
The registration form asks you to tick a box confirming you’ve read and agree to the Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy; it’s not pre-ticked, and the form won’t submit until you do. Both links open in a new tab so you can read them without losing what you’ve typed.
Changing your password
Go to your account and find the Quick links block. Choose Edit profile, where you can update your password. Your new password must meet the password requirements above — the form checks it before saving and tells you what’s missing if it doesn’t.
Resetting a forgotten password
Use the Lost your password? link on the sign-in screen. The password you choose there is checked against the same requirements as signing up or changing your password from your account.
The reset email comes from an address that isn’t monitored, so replies to it aren’t read. If you need help, write to support@retirerange.com — see Contact & support.
A sign-in message you might see
Leave a tab open overnight, or lose your wifi mid-session, and the calculator may show one of two different messages — worth telling apart, since only one of them means you need to do anything:
- A dismissible amber banner reading "Couldn’t reach the server to confirm your sign-in." This means the check simply couldn’t complete — a dropped connection, a slow network, a busy server — not that you were signed out. The calculator stays usable, your work is untouched, and the banner clears itself as soon as a request succeeds; it also carries a Retry now button if you don’t want to wait. You don’t need to log back in.
- A full-screen "Session expired — please log in again." This appears only when the server actually rejects your sign-in, so it does mean what it says — sign back in and pick up where you left off.
If you see the amber banner and it never clears, that itself is a sign to check your connection rather than to log out and back in.
